The Baltimore Orioles are bringing back a familiar face.
The Orioles announced on Wednesday that they have acquired Jorge Lopez, 30, from the Miami Marlins via waiver claim.
A native of Puerto Rico, Lopez has spent eight seasons in the major leagues, bouncing between five teams, posting a 22-40 record, 10 shutouts and 27 saves with a 5.52 ERA in 218 games.
This is Lopez’s second stint with the Orioles, as he was originally acquired from the Kansas City Royals via waiver claim in August 2020 and played for them until being traded to the Minnesota Twins at the 2022 trade deadline.
He was particularly good in 2022, posting a 1.68 ERA and 19 saves in 48 1/3 innings over 44 games and earning an All-Star selection.

After the trade, he did not fare well. He struggled with a 4.37 ERA in 23 games after the trade. In 2023, he appeared in 49 games between Minnesota and Miami, pitching 47 innings with a 6.13 ERA, seven holds, three saves, and four blown saves.
Depending on how you look at it, this trade could be seen as a correction of last year’s mistake, but that’s not necessarily the case.
One of the players Minnesota received for Lopez last year was Yoenis Cano, who has established himself as a setup man this season and was named an All-Star.
Lopez joined the team after Sept. 1, so he won’t be eligible to play if Baltimore makes the postseason.
