LG Twins manager Yoon Kyung-yeop rode the backs of his players to his first doubleheader win as manager.
LG won the first game of a doubleheader against the SSG Landers of the 2023 KBO League regular season 8-3 on Sunday at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul.
The game was characterized by league-leading focus and grit. LG scored just two runs in the fifth inning, but after the game resumed from a rain delay in the sixth inning, the team responded with three runs. Shin Min-jae, who had started the game, reached third base on a stolen base and a throwing error. Kim Hyun-soo followed with a tying double and consecutive RBI singles by Moon Bo-kyung and Park Dong-won gave LG the lead.
On the mound, Lee Jung-yong’s crisis management and the bullpen stood out. Lee was in trouble a few times on the day, but did his job with five innings and three runs (one earned). Yoo Young-chan followed with a scoreless inning of relief, and the bullpen of Park Myung-geun, Kim Jin-sung, and Go Woo-seok pitched another scoreless inning. Coach Yeom Kyung-yeop said after the game, “Shin Min-jae’s good base running in the sixth inning, Hyun-soo’s tying hit, and Bo Kyung-i’s clutch hit in a crucial situation gave us the overall flow. Dong-won’s lucky hit allowed us to score another run and bring the momentum to our side.”
“Starting pitcher Jung Yong-i did a good job as a starter by getting out of many crises, and Myung-geun Myung-ki and Woo Seok-i played solid baseball,” he said. “Especially Woo Seok-ki’s five outs were too much for him, but he cleaned up nicely and I want to praise him for being the best catcher today.”
Yeom attributed the biggest victory to the players, who remained focused despite the rain interruption, and the fans, who never stopped cheering. “In the first game of the doubleheader, there were rainy conditions and it was a tough game, but I would like to praise the players for showing their concentration until the end, and I would like to thank the fans for cheering hard with us,” said Yeom.
